This easy-to-clean finish looks sharp with any color scheme and will give your kitchen a dramatic edge. Rustic cabinetry pairs well with sage-green open shelving in this antique-inspired kitchen. Comb the aisles of any flea market or antique store to find one-of-a-kind treasures to enhance the look of a lived-in yet loved kitchen. Make the most of the busiest area in your house with these kitchen ideas. Hebe joined the Real Homes team in early 2018 as Staff Writer before moving to the Livingetc team in 2021 where she took on a role as Digital Editor. She loves boho and 70's style and is a big fan of Instagram as a source of interiors inspiration.

Blue Kitchen Walls

The wooden tone of this ceiling matches with the L-shaped cabinetry of the walls and the hardwood flooring. The bright white elements of this gorgeous kitchen are contrasted by the dark wood cabinetry of the L-shaped kitchen peninsula and kitchen island. This island has a breakfast bar that has a white countertop blending with its white modern stools. This beautiful Scandinavian-style kitchen has a beauty to its simplicity. It has a charming bare wooden kitchen cabinetry that perfectly matches with the light hardwood flooring.

Kitchen Ideas and Designs

If you live in a modern home and still want that cottage look, we think the easy way is to add plenty of texture and wooden accents. Choose a wooden farmhouse table, put up wooden shelves and decorate with nice traditional pieces, such as vintage crockery and cookware. Peninsula kitchens are similar to island kitchens but are connected to the main kitchen layout, extending from a wall or cabinet. This layout offers additional counter space, storage, and seating, bridging the gap between the kitchen and adjacent rooms. Peninsula kitchens provide a versatile solution for open-concept spaces, allowing for interaction with family and guests while cooking.

Sculptural Ceiling

Turn an under-utilized corner into a useful breakfast nook with a tiny round bistro-style table and pair of wooden chairs. Industrial-style pendants are right at home with the exposed ductwork in this factory-inspired kitchen. The space features an eye-catching mix of materials, including oak, stainless steel, powder-coated steel, marble, and recycled acrylic.

A crystal Sputnik chandelier and lacquered flat kitchen cabinets add a touch of retro glam to this midcentury modern-inspired space. If you're running low on space in a small kitchen, find another home for bulky pots and pans to clear up some room in your cabinets and drawers. Easily mount a pot rack to the wall or ceiling and hang your pots and pans for an easy kitchen storage solution.

Mixed materials—an eye-catching stone range hood, soapstone countertops, subway tile, reclaimed beams, Douglas fir cabinets, and rush barstools— reinforce a collected aesthetic. Give a white kitchen the look of a French bistro with floor-to-ceiling subway tile (choose a dark grout) and bistro-style open shelving. Homeowners Nora and Doug O'Leary host lots of guests at their Wisconsin cabin. To make everyone feel more at home and make hosting a little easier, the couple chose to install their cabinets without doors inviting guests to help themselves. “The idea was to avoid people asking where things are,” Nora says. “It’s all right there.” Beadboard cabinets, soapstone countertops, and handmade terra-cotta tiles set on the diagonal add to the vintage cottage vibe.

Island Kitchen Layout

A vibrant stucco hood creates an eye-catching focal point in this traditional kitchen design, while furniture-style dark-wood cabinetry plays up the antique quality. High-end materials like marble countertops and dark wood flooring infuse this transitional kitchen with elegance, but a splash of pink softens some of the formality. Ample overhead lighting and custom cabinetry make the workspace extra functional. In this cooking space, which opens to the adjacent dining room, a large island with stool seating beckons friends and family to sit down and stay awhile.

Large Kitchen Ideas

But the kitchen's functionality is fully American with abundant storage in the cabinetry and center island. They brighten up a space, make it look larger, and allow you to decorate however you want. Try a neutral, monochromatic look for a serene space, or add dashes of bright color to liven up a white kitchen.

Add a butler sink for an instant rustic feel

If you have three walls to contend with, you may be restricted to a U-shape or L-shape or G-shape. A true classic never goes out of style, as this très chic old-world kitchen proves. Creamy white cabinetry and oil-rubbed bronze hardware pair with a rich mahogany island and professional-grade appliances to mimic a well-appointed French kitchen.

Utilize your cabinets to their fullest potential by making the inside of the cabinet door your go-to spot for resources, recipes, and reminders. Print and hang phone numbers, grocery lists, calendars, and more in a common area where everyone in the house will know where to find them. Chalkboard paint can be used in many rooms throughout the house, but applying it in the kitchen is especially helpful.

Leafy Italian tiles in the range nook create a pretty backdrop for a custom oak-topped island in Mary Graham's restored millhouse. Embrace the cottagecore aesthetic and skip lower cabinet doors in favor of ruffled fabric skirts, as Meta Coleman did in this California kitchen. Skirts eliminate loud slams and broken hinges, but it's important to note that they are harder than doors to childproof. They add texture and interest and personality to a space that can otherwise be quite void of stuff that isn't, well... Use open shelving ideas to display your nicest crockery, but add prints and photos and house plants too. Maybe pick a few key colors and use them to start a new color scheme in your kitchen – it could be all your kitchen needs to feel refreshed. A all gold kitchen might a little much (but hey you do you) but a gold island?

Keep the walls and floors light and it's doesn't overwhelm the space at all, in fact it looks really fresh in this Mid-century kitchen. The most striking kitchen ideas will work hard at being functional and beautiful. There's a lot you can do in the way of layout and design to up your decor scheme in big and small spaces alike – whatever your budget.

The whitewashed pine lining the walls fuses perfectly with the bright blue cabinetry for a modern twist on coastal cottage style. The intricate veining of this black marble backsplash is balanced out by the clean lines and warm color of wood cabinets. Matte black hardware ties in well with the drama of the backsplash and coordinates with the modern kitchen countertops. This kitchen's geometric green backsplash plays off the foliage showcased outside a wall of windows.

This rack matches well with the other dark wooden elements of the gorgeous kitchen like the wooden chairs and the hardwood flooring. This spacious kitchen oozes with elegance due to the white coffered ceiling that is brightened by its recessed lights to pull focus on it. This is contrasted by the charcoal gray matte kitchen island with a dark wooden countertop matching the hardwood flooring.

Twelve 15 Design Studio used a deep blue shade for cabinets to create a room that feels more like a beach escape. Desiree Burns of Desiree Burns Interiors embraces the trend and adds a touch of beadboard paneling for texture and sophisticated black accents like pendants and backsplash to make the trend her own. Trends are cyclical and while you might wish some fads stayed in the past, chances are, they'll become popular again. Cathie Hong Interiors proved that dark wood kitchen cabinets are not stuck in the past when paired with modern hardware and a touch of open shelving. At this Sea Island, Georgia, home designed by Ellen Kavanaugh, the small kitchen reflects more seaside light thanks to iridescent tile from Paris Ceramics. Amping up the glam factor are the brass accents, from the floating shelves and hood cover to the cabinetry hardware and sink fixtures.

Going back to our very first system design course in 2016, Educative has always had deep roots in system design. As a result, hundreds of thousands of engineers have already leveled up their careers with the help of Educative’s system design resources. Now we’re thrilled to share this brand new course to help developers and managers navigate the evolving landscape of system design and design the future of scalable web applications.

About the Complete Guide to System Design Interview

Also, since we only have minutes to design a (supposedly) large system, we should clarify what parts of the system we will be focusing on. As designers, we need to provide fault tolerance at the design level because almost all modern systems use off-the-shelf components, and there are millions of such components. So, something will always be breaking down, and we need to hide this undesirable reality from our customers.

The main goal is to extract out important design details that are relevant to system design interviews. The course also presents a list of system design patterns that constitute the common design problems and their solutions that different distributed systems have developed over time. In this course, we have made the complex world of system design easy to understand.

While each of these courses has its merits, Grokking the System Design Interview offers a more comprehensive and structured approach to learning system design. The interactive nature of the course, combined with its real-world case studies and examples, sets it apart from other resources. Furthermore, the course is specifically designed for software engineers preparing for system design interviews, ensuring that you receive the most relevant and practical guidance. The history of libraries is a history of human thought for libraries have been the stronghold of thoughts preserving them and passing them from generation to generation. We can say that among the first centers of human civilization intellect was the library of the Mesopotamian peninsula a saying that has been proved correct by different Cuneiform script writings. Which means that libraries are not founded only in our modern time, but excavations of archaeologists have backed the idea that libraries as ancient as writing for it was a very crucial invention in human history and a factor in ancient civilizations' development. Then in the the 12th century, Toledo in Andalucia (Muslim Spain) became the focus of another huge translation effort – this time from Arabic to latin.

Greek Mythology

For this purpose, al-Mansur founded a palace library, modeled after the Sassanian Imperial Library, and provided economic and political support to the intellectuals working there. He also invited delegations of scholars from India and other places to share their knowledge of mathematics and astronomy with the new Abbasid court. The House of Wisdom included a society of scientists and academics, a translation department and a library that preserved the knowledge acquired by the Abbasids over the centuries. They also researched and studied alchemy, which was later used to create the structure of modern chemistry. Furthermore, linked to it were also astronomical observatories and other major experimental endeavors. Institutionalized by Al-Ma’mun, the academy encouraged the transcription of Greek philosophical and scientific efforts.

During this time, Sahl ibn Harun, a Persian poet and astrologer, was the chief librarian of the Bayt al-Hikma. Hunayn ibn Ishaq (809–873) an Arab Nestorian Christian physician and scientist, was the most productive translator producing 116 works for the Arabs. Al-Ma’mun established the House of Wisdom, putting Hunayn ibn Ishaq in charge, who then became the most celebrated translator of Greek texts. As “Sheikh of the translators” he was placed in charge of the translation work by the caliph. Hunayn ibn Ishaq translated the entire collection of Greek medical books, including famous pieces by Galen and Hippocrates.

The House of Wisdom flourished under al-Ma’mun’s successors al-Mu’tasim (r. 833 – 842) and his son al-Wathiq (r. 842 – 847), but considerably declined under the reign of al-Mutawakkil (r. 847–861). Although al-Ma’mun, al-Mu’tasim, and al-Wathiq followed the sect of Mu’tazili, which supported mind-broadness and scientific inquiry, al-Mutawakkil endorsed a more literal interpretation of the Qur’an and Hadith. The caliph was not interested in science and moved away from rationalism, seeing the spread of Greek philosophy as anti-Islamic. By the eighth century, with western Europe languishing in its dark ages, the Islamic empire covered an area larger in expanse than either the Roman empire at its height or all the lands conquered and ruled by Alexander the Great. So powerful and influential was this empire that, for a period stretching over 700 years, the international language of science was Arabic.

It is likely that without the Muslim libraries, modern Europe's scientific and intellectual progress would have been remarkably inhibited. Employees in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad were people of higher intellectual abilities, the same was emulated in every public library across the Muslim world. They often had a staff list that reach sometimes hundreds of copyists, illuminators, binders, translators, and authors. Those whom we can consider librarians were not randomly chosen but they usually were scholars, poets, multilingual and writers who on the other side were well paid by caliphs, rulers or nobles.

The main means of public transportation are the red double-deck bus (introduced by the British) and the public taxi. Hundreds of thousands of citizens work for the government, directly or indirectly, in the civil service, in government-run educational institutions, and in government-owned industrial and commercial enterprises. However, the Iran–Iraq War of the 1980s was a difficult time for the city, as money flowed into the army and thousands of residents were killed. Iran launched a number of missile attacks against Baghdad, although they caused relatively little damage and few casualties. Nevertheless, the city remained one of the cultural and commercial hubs of the Islamic world until February 10, 1258, when it was sacked by the Mongols under Hulagu Khan. The Mongols killed most of the city's inhabitants, including the Abbasid Caliph Al-Musta'sim, and destroyed large sections of the city.

Many of the victim's bodies were then dragged through the streets of Baghdad.[citation needed]During the 1970s, Baghdad experienced a period of prosperity and growth because of a sharp increase in the price of petroleum, Iraq's main export. New infrastructure including modern sewerage, water, and highway facilities were built during this period. The masterplans of the city (1967, 1973) were delivered by the Polish planning office Miastoprojekt-Kraków, mediated by Polservice.[83] However, the Iran–Iraq War of the 1980s was a difficult time for the city, as money was diverted by Saddam Hussein to the army and thousands of residents were killed.

Ancient Egypt

Adept at the sciences since his early childhood, he had extensions built for each of the house’s different branches of knowledge, where scholars from around the world came to exchange knowledge. The eighth-century mathematician al-Khwarizmi (who introduced what later came to be known as Arabic numerals), the astronomer Yahya ibn Abi Mansurh, the philosopher al-Kindi, and the mystic al-Hallaj, were all regular patrons of the library. Stories like this make me understand just why the belief system of Islam is considered to be ‘ok’ & not a problem to so many Westerners. This shows that the people of that time – these at least- were not extremists & did not hold to the ferocious writings in the Koran that cause the violence of the likes of ISIS nowadays and in other times & places. The problem is always that of the few who take literally every word spelt out in their religious ‘book’ !!! It still gives us a problem in this age as we try to deal with the kooks who want to blow up everyone who won’t just follow their professed ‘God’ !

These helped in bringing people into the city, and around these entrances, markets allowed travelers to trade.[9] The link in trade routes provided goods to the city, which allowed markets to draw people from all over the Middle East. The four straight roads that ran towards the center of the city from the outer gates were lined with vaulted arcades containing merchants' shops and bazaars. Smaller streets ran off these four main arteries, giving access to a series of squares and houses; the limited space between the main wall and the inner wall was due to Mansur's desire to maintain the heart of the city as a royal preserve. There are numerous historic, scientific and artistic museums in Baghdad which include, Iraq Museum, Baghdadi Museum, Natural History Museum and several others. Baghdad has a hot desert climate (Köppen BWh), featuring extremely hot, prolonged, dry summers and mild to cool, slightly wet, short winters.

Many of the Abbasid caliphs were patrons of learning and enjoyed collecting both ancient and contemporary literature. Although some of the princes of the previous Umayyad dynasty had begun to gather and translate Greek scientific literature, the Abbasids were the first to foster Greek learning on a large scale. Many of these libraries were private collections intended only for the use of the owners and their immediate friends, but the libraries of the caliphs and other officials soon took on a public or a semi-public character.[60] Four great libraries were established in Baghdad during this period. Another was established by Sabur ibn Ardashir in 991 or 993 for the literary men and scholars who frequented his academy.[60] This second library was plundered and burned by the Seljuks only seventy years after it was established. This was a good example of the sort of library built up out of the needs and interests of a literary society.[60] The last two were examples of madrasa or theological college libraries.

Often, al-Ma’mun would assign handpicked renowned scholars to perform specific translations of works. An example of such was the selection of the famous scholar Abu Yousuf Ya'qoub Al-Kindi, who had an impressive level of qualifications which included being a physician, philosopher, mathematician, geometer, logician, and astronomer, to be the one in charge of translating of the works of Aristotle. But it was also al-Maʾmūn’s reign that brought about a change in wind for Bayt al-Hikmah, which had hitherto specialized in Persian knowledge. In the final years of his reign, he undertook a dramatic shift in the imperial ideology. He endorsed an Islamic theology that stressed free will and dialectical reasoning (see kalām; Muʿtazilah). In an ironic show of force, al-Maʾmūn engaged in an inquisition (the miḥnah) and persecuted those who would not conform.

Circle Symbolizes Unity in Diversity

With the compass opening below, draw the circle in which the three smaller ones are inscribed. The inscribed circle can now be drawn, with centre O and radius OF. This method is to fit a number of circles in a polygon equal to the number of sides of that polygon (three circles in a triangle, five in a pentagon, four or eight in an octagon...). The circle can now be drawn, with the compass point on O and the opening set to OQ. Move the dry point to A and draw another arc cutting the first at B.

Oblong shapes, almost-rectangles with dramatically curved edges – these elements all take on meanings of their own. So we will focus on the perfect ring and its recent popularity in design projects. These are all great reasons for considering the use of circles in design. But circles can also be tough to handle because they can create odd spaces and may not work well with other design elements.

Baghdad History, Population, Map, & Facts

But Rashid’s eldest son, the seventh Abbasid caliph, al-Mamun ( ), had greater ambitions for the building. Therefore, the House of Wisdom at the time of Rashid was called Bayt al-Hikmah as it was comprised of a single building. In Arabic, the term bayt (house) refers to a “covered space”, contrary to dar which refers to a complex comprising several bayt. Immediately upon taking power, he commanded his vizier Yahya al-Baramika to transfer part of the palace’s private library into a public space.

Ancient Technology

Having shown much potential, the brothers were enrolled in the library and translation center of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. They began translating ancient Greek into Arabic after quickly mastering the language, as well as paying large sums to obtain manuscripts from the Byzantine Empire for translation. Mohammad Musa might have been the first person in history to point to the universality of the laws of physics. In the 10th century, Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen) performed several physical experiments, mainly in optics, achievements still celebrated today.

Baghdad's House of Wisdom: Uniting East and West to pursue knowledge

Arabic works and translations of important ancient Greek texts came to light, and Christian, Jewish and Muslim scholars flocked to the city to translate ancient Greek and Arabic treaties to Latin and then into European languages. Some of Baghdad’s most famous Caliphs including Al-Rashid and Al-Ma’mun had taken a personal interest in collecting global, ground-breaking scientific works. As well as collecting books from East and West, they brought together scholars from the corners of the Muslim land to create one of the greatest intellectual academies in history.

Center of learning (8th–9th centuries)

It is not acceptable to speak of “Islamic Medieval Civilisation”, “Islamic Medieval Architecture”, “Islamic Medieval Science”, “Islamic Medieval Philosophy”, etc. This is because the term “Medieval” applies to European history only , for while Europe was asleep during the Dark Ages, Middle Ages, Medieval Ages, Islamic Civilisation, Culture and Heritage were in ascendancy and reached their highest achievements in various parts of the Islamic World. Abdullah Ibn al-Muqaffa ( ) was another pioneer of literary translation sponsored by the House of Wisdom. He took Greek words, such as "philosophia" that became "falsafa" in Arabic, and found translation solutions via what contemporary translators would call equivalents. Later, al-Mamun would appoint him head editor in charge of revising all translations at the House. Al-Mamun’s dedication to collecting texts and expanding the repository of classical knowledge earned him the nickname “the sage of Baghdad”.

It was designed by Caliph al-Mansur.[1] According to 11th-century scholar Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in his History of Baghdad,[2] each course of the city wall consisted of 162,000 bricks for the first third of the wall's height. The city was rebuilt and flourished under Ilkhanid rule, but never rose to its former glory. It was briefly occupied by Safavid Persia in 1508, but fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1534. With the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, Baghdad fell under the British Mandate in 1920 and became the capital of the independent Kingdom of Iraq in 1932 (converted to a Republic in 1958). Baghdad is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups with an Arab majority, as well as Kurds, Turkmens, Assyrians, Yazidis, Shabakis, Armenians and Mandaeans. The majority of the citizens are Muslims with minorities of Christians, Yezidis and Mandeans also present.

He was the first caliph who motivated Muslims to study sciences and develop them, he also advised them to translate books from Persian, Greek, and Indian languages. Among the books that al-Mansur initiated their translations were the book of Al-Sind Hind a book on mathematics and a huge collection of Aristotle, Euclid and of Claudius Ptolemy writings. The House of Wisdom (بيت الحكمة‎; Bayt al-Ḥikmah) refers either to a major Abbasid public academy and intellectual center in Baghdad or to a large private library belonging to the Abbasid Caliphs during the Islamic Golden Age.

baghdad house of wisdom

During the period of British control, the Mandatory administration ordered the construction of several new architectural projects around the city.[21] Iraq was given formal independence by the British in 1932, and increased autonomy in 1946. On 14 July 1958, the Iraqi king, Faisal II, was executed and the monarchy was dissolved after a revolution, forming a republic. During the 1970s, Baghdad experienced a period of prosperity and growth because of a sharp increase in the price of petroleum, Iraq's main export. New infrastructure including modern sewers, water, and highway facilities were built during this period. The basic framework of the city consists of two large semicircles about 19 km (12 mi) in diameter. The inner city connecting them was designed as a circle about 2 km (1.2 mi) in diameter, leading it to be known as the "Round City".

During the brief British stay at the end of the first world war, its gatehouse was used as a garrison church. Nothing of those medieval walls, or the east gate, remains today; I remember Bab al-Sharji as a sprawling, noisy and bustling square, with its food stalls and secondhand record shops scattered around the busy bus depot and taxi ranks. But its name is a reminder of the expansion and transformation of this proud city over the years since its foundation in AD762 as the new seat of power of the mighty Abbasid empire. Indeed, no other city on Earth has had to put up with the levels of death and destruction that Baghdad has endured over the centuries. And yet, as the capital of one of the world's great empires, this was the richest, proudest, most supercilious city on the planet for half a millennium. They also brought together scholars to create one of the great intellectual centres in history, called the House of Wisdom.

Besides their translations of earlier works and their commentaries on them, scholars at the Bayt al-Ḥikma produced important original research. For example, the noted mathematician al-Khwarizmi worked in al-Maʾmun’s House of Wisdom and is famous for his contributions to the development of algebra. Institutionalized by al-Ma'mun, the academy encouraged the transcription of Greek philosophical and scientific efforts. Between May and September the average daily maximum temperature reaches the low 100s F (low 40s C), and the high may reach the low 120s F (high 40s C) at midday in July and August. Intense daytime heat is mitigated by low relative humidity (10 to 50 percent) and a temperature decline of 30 °F (17 °C) or more at night. In winter the average daytime temperature is in the mid-50s F (low 10s C), and the temperature occasionally drops below freezing.

Note that these works would later become standard textbooks of medicine during the Renaissance. With all other libraries in Baghdad, the House of Wisdom was destroyed by the army of Hulagu during the Siege of Baghdad. The books from Baghdad’s libraries were thrown into the Tigris River in such quantities that the river ran black with the ink from the books.

The original House of Wisdom was a shining center of knowledge, translation, and scholarship during the Golden Age of Islam. Tragically, during the 2003 war in Iraq, the Central Library in Baghdad, the House of Islamic Manuscripts (Dar Al-Makhtoutat Al-Islamiya) in Baghdad, and many other university and public libraries in Baghdad, Mosul and Basra were pillaged and burnt down. One must also mention that in some of the cities of the Eastern Provinces of the Islamic World, several “Houses of Science” (Dour Al-‘Ilm, singular Dar Al-‘Ilm), or more accurately “Houses of Knowledge”, were established in the 9th and 10th Centuries to emulate that of Dar Al-Hikma in Baghdad.

In addition, a dirt track extended south past the War Eagle Mine into the Dale Mining District in the Pinto Mountains. On the west bank are a number of residential quarters, including Al-Karkh (an older quarter) and several upper middle-class districts with walled villas and green gardens. Chief among these is Al-Manṣūr, surrounding the racetrack, which provides boutiques, fast-food restaurants, and sidewalk cafés that appeal to its affluent professional residents. These areas were the most heavily developed sections of the city under the Baʿathist regime of Saddam Hussein.

It became the seed from which sprouted all the subsequent achievements of this golden age of science, from Uzbekistan in the east to Spain in the west. But it is well established and uncontroversial that the much earlier academy in Alexandria was likewise more than just a library, for it not only brought together under one roof much of the world's accumulated knowledge, but acted as a magnet for many of the world's greatest thinkers and scholars. The patronage of the Egyptian Ptolemaic dynasty, which provided travel, lodging and stipends to those men, is not so different from the government research grants that university academics worldwide receive today to carry out their research.

Caliph Haroon al-Rasheed is credited with expanding the glory of Baghdad to its greatest height during his reign from 786 to 809 C.E. He created an intellectual ambience by encouraging mathematicians, astronomers, scientists, and philosophers. His son, Caliph al-Mamoon went a step further by establishing the House of Wisdom in, an academic institute devoted to translations, research, and education. It quickly became one of the most famous centers of learning, attracting scholars from all over the world, from many cultures and religions. The House of Wisdom has played a distinguished role in the history of the Middle Ages for it was a bridge that transmitted the ancient civilizations including the Islamic one to the west, as it was the departure of modern sciences. Historians have a major consent that thanks to the house of wisdom and other similar schools and libraries, the continuity of human civilization was preserved after the fall of Greek and Roman civilizations.

It was bypassed by the opening of Interstate 40 to the north in 1973, and lost traveler's business and resident population. Adjacent to these commercial districts are older, middle-class residential areas, such as Al-Sulaykh to the north, Al-Wāziriyyah to the west, and Al-Karrādah to the south, now densely settled. The University of Baghdad and a fashionable residential area are located on Al-Jādriyyah, a peninsula formed by a bend in the Tigris. Baghdad is also the centre of a regional road network, connecting the city by overland routes with Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Iran, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. Within the city, a network of expressways completed in the 1980s relieves traffic congestion and links the city centre with its suburbs.

The institution he created to realise his dream epitomises more than anything else the blossoming of the scientific golden age. 1001 Inventions is an award-winning international science and cultural heritage organisation that raises awareness of the creative golden age of Arabic Science. The successful knowledge transfer and the creation of a centre of learning in Baghdad was echoed in many other cities across Muslim Civilisation. Other cities in the eastern provinces of the Muslim civilisation also established House of Science (Dar al-‘Ilm), or more accurately Houses of Knowledge, in the 9th and 10th centuries to emulate that of Baghdad. The legacy left by the scholars of the House of Wisdom and those who came after them in the golden age Muslim civilisation is huge.Unfortunately, thousands of the books that were collected and made in Baghdad were lost or destroyed in later centuries.
